A classical Viennese coffeehouse in a baroque setting
The wonderful baroque palace gardens in Schönbrunn were designed under Franz I Stephan of Lorraine, Maria Theresa’s husband. The park is structured by a star-shaped system of avenues with intersecting walks and vistas, as well as two main diagonal avenues which meet at the dominant central axis of the palace. The centre of the gardens is occupied by the so-called “Great Parterre” with its strictly symmetrical flowerbeds.
At the far end of the Great Parterre and at the foot of the hill that steeply rises behind the palace the Neptune Fountain is located. The Neptune Fountain was built between 1776 and 1779. The huge sculptural group in Sterzing marble from which the sea god Neptune rises in the centre was created by the sculptor Wilhelm Beyer.
Next to the Neptune Fountain the Schönbrunn Zoo is located. It is the oldest zoo in the world and was founded by Franz I Stephan of Lorraine. The design goes back to the year 1751, but the menagerie was completed only in the year 1759.
One of the entrances to the zoo is right next to the Neptune Fountain. Here is where you can find Landtmann’s Parkcafé, which was opened in April 2009.
It is one of the cafés operated by the Querfeld family, who also run the legendary Café Landtmann. Therefore visitors to Landtmann’s Parkcafé can expect to find exactly the same features that make the Café Landtmann so special: attentive waiters, fine Viennese coffee specialties and lovely cakes and pastries.
Landtmann’s Parkcafé is a summer café, which only opens from 1st April to 31st October. It has a lovely terrace equipped with large sunshades and patio heaters so that you can enjoy the great atmosphere of the baroque palace gardens in all kinds of weather.
